Haunting Encounters
A Voice Upstairs Told Him “Come Here.” His Next Memory Was 30 Minutes Later
A boy stood at the bottom of the staircase in his family’s old house in New Sweden, Maine, when he heard something speaking from upstairs. The voice was low and rough, unlike anyone he recognized. It gave him a simple instruction.
“Come here.”
He remembered hearing those words clearly. But the next thing he could recall was standing in the kitchen with his family, with no idea how he’d gotten there. It would be years before he understood that his brother had also experienced something frightening involving that staircase.
Strange Things Had Always Happened There
The boy grew up in New Sweden, a small community in northern Maine. His family lived in an old house where unusual noises and unexplained incidents had become familiar parts of daily life.
Sometimes footsteps seemed to move through empty rooms. Doors would open or close when nobody was nearby, leaving family members wondering what had caused them to move.
One incident happened during winter, when a door suddenly slammed. The family went outside to check whether someone had approached the house.
Snow covered the ground, making it easy to see if anyone had walked up to the building. But there were no fresh footprints leading to the door.
Despite these experiences, the family continued living there. The strange occurrences weren’t constant, and most days passed without anything particularly unusual happening.
For the boy, though, one part of the house always felt different.
Something Waited at the Top
For years, he experienced a recurring nightmare involving the upstairs landing. In the dream, he would reach the top of the staircase and encounter a dark, sheet-like figure.
The thing seemed to wrap around him, swallowing him inside its darkness. The dream returned often enough that he began dreading what waited for him whenever he fell asleep. He assumed it was his own private nightmare, something nobody else in the family experienced.
But his brother had been having recurring nightmares too. Instead of a dark sheet-like presence, his brother dreamed of a witch-like figure that tried to pull him upward toward the ceiling.
The brothers described different figures, but both dreams took place at the same upstairs landing. Learning that they had been frightened by the same location made the boy’s own nightmares even more unsettling.
The Voice on the Staircase
The most frightening experience happened while he was awake. He remembered standing at the foot of the staircase when he heard a low, guttural-sounding voice coming from above.
There was no long conversation. The voice spoke just two words, telling him to come closer.
He didn’t see anyone on the landing or hear footsteps approaching. His memory simply stopped after the voice spoke.
When he became aware of his surroundings again, he was in the kitchen with his family. He later estimated that approximately half an hour had passed.
He couldn’t remember climbing the stairs, meeting anyone, or returning downstairs. Even as he grew older, he was never able to recall what had happened during that missing interval.
The House He Never Forgot
As an adult, he eventually moved away from Maine and settled in Massachusetts. But memories of the old house stayed with him. He later shared his childhood experiences on Real Ghost Stories Online, describing the unexplained footsteps, the winter door slamming, and the recurring nightmares.
What frightened him most was how the pieces seemed to connect. Both brothers had dreamed of threatening figures upstairs, and he’d heard a voice calling from that direction while he was awake.
He could remember exactly what the voice had told him.
But he never remembered what happened after he heard it.
