She Saw a Woman in Dover Castle’s Second-Floor Window
On her first day working at Dover Castle, Cecilia noticed a woman standing at an upstairs window of an old military building. She appeared to be wearing a dark hooded cloak and was looking out toward the car park.
Cecilia thought little of it. She was new to the enormous castle complex, and seeing someone inside one of its many historic buildings didn’t seem unusual.
Later, she mentioned the woman to two coworkers. Their reaction surprised her.
They told her nobody could have been standing in that window. Then they offered to take her inside and show her why.
An Old Building With a Strange History
Dover Castle has stood watch over England’s southern coast for centuries. Its enormous grounds contain medieval fortifications, military tunnels, barracks, and buildings added during different periods of British history.
One of those buildings was the Victorian Officers’ Mess, part of a military complex constructed during the 1850s. Designed by architect Anthony Salvin, the Officers’ New Barracks were built between 1856 and 1858. They provided accommodation and facilities for officers stationed at the fortress.
From outside, the building looked much like any other large Victorian military structure. Rows of windows lined its walls, suggesting several floors of rooms and corridors behind them. But by the time Cecilia started working at the castle, the building had undergone major changes.
It had reportedly been closed to ordinary staff and visitors for years. Much of its interior had been stripped out during earlier demolition and conversion work.
Cecilia knew none of that when she spotted the woman at the window.
They Took Her Inside
When Cecilia told her colleagues what she’d seen, they asked her to describe exactly which window the woman had been standing in. She pointed out the location. The woman had appeared to be standing on the second floor, looking through the glass toward the car park.
Her coworkers knew the building well enough to recognize a problem with that description. Rather than simply telling Cecilia she must have been mistaken, they took her into the old Officers’ Mess.
Inside, the building was practically a shell. Much of the interior had been removed, leaving open spaces where rooms and corridors had once existed.
They showed Cecilia the area directly behind the window where she’d seen the hooded woman. There was no floor.
The second-storey flooring had been taken out. Anyone standing in the position Cecilia described would have been suspended above the empty space below.
Cecilia stared at the place where she’d seen the woman. From outside, the window had looked perfectly ordinary, with nothing to suggest the room behind it was gone.
Yet she’d clearly remembered a figure standing there, looking out through the glass.
The Woman in the Hooded Cloak
Cecilia hadn’t been searching for ghosts when she arrived at work that morning. She’d simply glanced across the car park and noticed someone in a window.
The woman hadn’t waved, moved suddenly, or done anything to attract attention. She appeared to be standing quietly, dressed in what looked like a dark hooded cloak.
Nothing about the sighting had frightened Cecilia at the time. It was only after entering the building that she began to understand why her coworkers had reacted so strongly.
But they had something else to tell her. According to an account featured on the Haunted UK Podcast, Cecilia’s manager explained that the Officers’ Mess already had a reputation for sightings of a mysterious woman. People associated the building with an apparition sometimes called the Grey Lady.
And there was an older story about her that Cecilia had never heard.
The Grey Lady’s Warning
Years earlier, according to the story Cecilia’s manager told her, a party had been taking place inside the Officers’ Mess. During the gathering, an unfamiliar woman reportedly appeared and warned people about a fire.
Her warning drew attention to the danger, but afterward, nobody could identify who she was. The people attending the event reportedly had no recollection of inviting a woman matching her description. The mysterious visitor became part of the building’s ghost stories, remembered as the Grey Lady.
Cecilia hadn’t known about those reports when she arrived for her first day. She’d never heard of the Grey Lady or the fire warning.
She’d simply seen a woman standing in an upstairs window.
