They Bought an Abandoned Castle. Something Was Already There

Véronique Geffroy was clearing out an old French castle when she heard a woman’s voice right beside her ear. The voice sounded angry, almost as though somebody was demanding to know what she was doing.

She turned around, expecting to find someone standing behind her. But the room was empty, and she couldn’t understand where the voice had come from.

Véronique and her husband had recently bought the property. She was busy cleaning out drawers, sorting through abandoned belongings, and trying to figure out where to begin with the repairs. Dealing with an angry woman she couldn’t see hadn’t been part of the plan.

She Fell in Love With a Castle in Ruins

Château de Fougeret stands near the village of Queaux in western France, overlooking the Vienne River. The oldest parts of the building date back to the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century. It was extensively remodeled during the nineteenth century, giving it the grand appearance of a castle from a fairytale.

By 2009, though, it was looking pretty rough. The property had been neglected for decades, with broken windows, rotting wood, and vegetation spreading across the grounds.

Véronique was a historian who had always loved old castles. When she discovered Fougeret while searching for a property near her husband’s farm, she wanted to see it immediately.

She fell in love with the place despite its condition. In March 2009, she and her husband, François-Joseph, bought it and began the enormous job of bringing it back to life.

With three children and a building that needed repairs almost everywhere, they already had their hands full. But it wasn’t long before they began noticing things that had nothing to do with the castle’s condition.

A Dark Figure Crossed the Hallway

One evening, around six o’clock, Véronique saw a dark shape moving across the entrance hall. It looked human, but it didn’t move like an ordinary person. She described watching the figure glide quickly across the hallway before disappearing.

Her husband had a different experience while walking outside. He suddenly felt somebody touch his back, almost like a tap on the shoulder. When he turned around, there was nobody there.

At first, neither knew what to make of these encounters. They were busy with repairs, and the last thing they wanted was another problem to deal with. But their daughter Mathilde soon had an experience that was much harder to brush aside.

Their Daughter Saw a Woman in Red

Mathilde reported seeing a woman with short, dark hair wearing a red dress. The stranger was holding a cigarette, and Mathilde could describe her appearance in considerable detail.

She said she saw the same woman twice. The sightings were especially unsettling because Mathilde had no idea who the stranger was or why she would be inside the castle.

Véronique began wondering whether the different experiences might be connected to people who had once lived at Fougeret. It was a possibility she couldn’t easily investigate, especially when the sightings seemed to happen without warning. And the unusual activity wasn’t limited to distant hallways or empty bedrooms.

A Fork Flew Across the Kitchen

The kitchen was supposed to be one of the more comfortable places in the castle. Instead, it became the setting for some of the family’s strangest experiences.

Véronique described an incident in which a fork suddenly moved through the air without anybody touching it. She said it flew around the room while she watched.

The family also heard knocking against the kitchen windows. Whenever somebody went outside to check, they found nobody.

What made these experiences especially frustrating was how unexpectedly they happened. The family might be enjoying a meal or celebrating something when a sudden noise interrupted them.

They couldn’t simply avoid one troublesome room, because the incidents happened in places they used every day. Living at Fougeret was becoming exhausting, and Véronique began wondering whether buying the castle had been a mistake.

They Thought About Leaving

Véronique had been the one who wanted the property. She’d persuaded her family to take on an enormous restoration project, and now she was worried about what she’d brought them into.

In later interviews, she admitted that there were times when she regretted the purchase. Had she known what she believed they would experience, she might have thought twice about buying Fougeret.

Selling would have been the easiest way out, but she wasn’t ready to give up on the castle. Instead, she began inviting people interested in paranormal experiences to visit. Some were investigators, while others claimed to be able to communicate with spirits.

Talking to outsiders helped the family become more comfortable discussing what they’d seen and heard. It also gave Véronique an idea about how she might learn more about the people associated with the property.

She was a historian, after all, and the castle had centuries of records worth exploring.

The Old Records Revealed Former Residents

Véronique began researching the families who had lived at Fougeret, looking through historical documents and tracing the property’s ownership. One name that emerged was Maurice Patris, an entrepreneur who acquired the castle during the 1930s. He had owned Fougeret long before the Geffroys arrived.

As more investigators and visitors came to the property, some began describing people they believed they’d encountered inside. Véronique compared their accounts with what she’d uncovered about former residents.

The process fascinated her. She had originally been interested in the castle’s architecture, but now she was researching its former occupants for an entirely different reason.

And as people heard about these experiences, more of them wanted to visit.

The Ghost Stories Helped Save the Castle

On November 9, 2010, the French government officially recognized Fougeret as a historic monument. The designation acknowledged the value of its architecture, including decorated ceilings, wall paintings, elaborate woodwork, and carved stone. It was an important development for a property that had spent so many years neglected.

But official recognition didn’t pay the repair bills. Restoring a building that old was expensive, and there was always something else that needed fixing.

The family began welcoming visitors interested in the castle’s history and its reputation for unusual activity. Some came to explore the rooms and learn about the people who’d lived there. Others wanted to spend the night, hoping they might hear footsteps, encounter a mysterious figure, or experience something they couldn’t explain.

Overnight stays became an important part of the business. The attention also helped bring people into rooms that had been empty and deteriorating for decades.

Véronique warned visitors that strange experiences weren’t guaranteed. Some people reported hearing voices or seeing figures, while others spent an uneventful night enjoying the historic surroundings.

Still, plenty of guests were willing to take their chances.

After all, there aren’t many places where you can book a room in a centuries-old castle and secretly hope something wakes you up.
